Law & Order: Mom from Jacksonville fatally shot in Atlanta
A woman from Jacksonville who was pursuing an acting and modeling career in Atlanta was gunned down there Friday night - on the eve of her 36th birthday and nearly four months to the day after her brother was slain during a fight outside a Duval County strip club.
Jokisha "Kisha" Brown of Duluth, Ga., was shot to death shortly after 10 p.m. while sitting inside a Mercedes sedan parked at a strip mall in the 2100 block of Cheshire Bridge Road near Faulkner Road in northeast Atlanta, according to Atlanta police.
Police said Brown, who was the mother of a young son, died at the scene. She apparently had been shot multiple times through the front passenger window in a parking lot near The Red Snapper restaurant, the Gwinnett Day Post reported.
No arrests were reported as of Saturday night. Police had not identified any potential suspect or possible motive. However, Facebook posts by friends indicated Brown, also known as Jokisha Dynasty Brown, recently had fled a violent relationship with a man accused of abducting and sexually assaulting her.
Brown, who would have been 36 on Saturday, starred in the 2010 movie "Queen Pin," filmed in Jacksonville, which was a crime drama about a woman who decides to take over her drug-dealing lover's business after he dies, according to the Internet Movie Database.
Her slaying comes in the wake of the March 2 killing of her 28-year-old brother, Marlon Louis Brice. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has said Brice was shot to death about 1:20 a.m. that day in the parking lot of the Silver Fox Club, 3243 W. Beaver St.
Brice died at the scene, and a second man was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in the face. Police have said that witnesses told them the double shooting occurred after some club patrons who had been fighting were kicked out of the club.
At 10:41 a.m. Friday, Brown posted the following message on her Facebook page:
"I thank you lord for truly showing up in my life, always. I pray everyday you just order my footsteps and bless me with the wisdom to make great decisions in my life. The only thing I would love to have for my birthday is just have a fun loving dream tonight about my brother Marlon … First bday without you God please give me strength because the very thought makes my stomach weak and these eyes water … but I also know it doesn't hurt to cleanse the soul, Kisha."
When her brother died, Brown started a account to raise money "for Marlon to be buried properly." At that time, Brown wrote that her brother "left behind 2 small kids ages 5 and 4, total of 4 sisters and 2 brothers behind. We did not have any kind of life insurance on Marlon."
As of Saturday night, the fundraiser for Brice had raised $15,800, according to the online site.
Facebook and Twitter postings indicated that a similar online fundraiser was in the works for Brown.
