Biography of Bob Weir

Early Life and Musical Career

Bob Weir, born Robert Hall 'Bob' Weir, is an American singer, composer, and guitarist. He was born in San Francisco, California, and grew up in Atherton, a small town on the outskirts of the city. Weir started playing the guitar at the age of thirteen after less successful attempts at piano and trumpet. He faced numerous challenges in school due to undiagnosed dyslexia, a condition that affects reading and writing skills despite overall learning ability. As a result, he was frequently expelled from different schools he attended.

The Formation of Grateful Dead

The formation of the iconic band 'Grateful Dead' is an unusual and serendipitous story. On the eve of 1963, a sixteen-year-old Weir and his friend were wandering the streets, looking for a club that would let them in when they unexpectedly heard someone playing the banjo. That person turned out to be the young Jerry Garcia, who had mistakenly mixed up the day and was waiting for his students. Weir and Garcia became acquainted and spent the evening playing music together. That same evening, they decided to form a band. The Beatles heavily influenced their musical direction, with Weir stating that they became a rock 'n' roll band because of the Beatles' unreal appeal. Throughout the thirty-year history of 'Grateful Dead,' Weir played rhythm guitar and frequently served as a vocalist.

Solo and Side Projects

Weir's unique guitar technique was influenced by jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, saxophonist John Coltrane, Reverend Gary Davis, and Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. In 1972, he released his first solo album. While continuing to perform as a member of 'Grateful Dead,' Weir played with other bands such as 'Kingfish' in 1975 and 1976. He also participated in the recording of Kelly K.'s album 'AwingandaPrayer.' In 1978, he formed his own band, 'Bob Weir Band,' and in 1980, he started another side project called 'Bobby and the Midnites.' After Jerry Garcia's death, Weir formed the band 'RatDog' in 1995, with whom he has played numerous concerts. 'RatDog' performs both original material and cover versions of songs by The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Willie Dixon, and 'Grateful Dead' hits.

Later Career

In 2011, Weir established the 'Tamalpais Research Institute,' also known as 'TRI Studios,' a high-tech recording studio that allows live concerts to be streamed in high-definition and real-time over the internet. Weir regularly organizes performances by various artists at 'TRI Studios' and occasionally appears with his own projects. In 1994, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of 'Grateful Dead.' Weir is married to Natascha Münter and has two daughters. He continues to actively perform as a solo artist, with new concerts consistently appearing on his schedule.
